Morocco experienced a devastating earthquake late on Friday night, with the country's Interior Ministry reporting a death toll of at least 632 people and 329 injured. The toll is expected to rise as rescue and relief efforts continue. The earthquake, measured at a powerful 6.8 magnitude, struck 72 kilometres west of Marrakesh, a significant economic hub. The historic red walls surrounding the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, have also sustained damage.
The United States Geological Survey initially recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.8 when it occurred at 11:11 pm, causing several seconds of intense shaking. However, Morocco's National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network registered the earthquake at a Richter scale measurement of 7.
Following the initial quake, a 4.9 magnitude aftershock rattled the region, occurring 19 minutes later, further exacerbating the situation. Reports indicate that the earthquake's impact was felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria, according to data from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere and Algeria's Civil Defense agency.
